Does Chondroitin Sulfate Raise Blood Pressure? Mar 22, 2024

Chondroitin sulfate is a naturally occurring compound found in the connective tissues of humans and animals. It is commonly extracted from animal sources, such as cow or shark cartilage. As a supplement, chondroitin sulfate is consumed to support joint health, reduce inflammation, and alleviate symptoms of osteoarthritis.

One study conducted on a small group of participants suggested a potential association between chondroitin sulfate use and increased blood pressure. However, these findings were disputed by larger, more comprehensive studies that did not find a significant link between chondroitin sulfate supplementation and elevated blood pressure. In fact, some studies even reported a slight decrease in blood pressure in individuals using chondroitin sulfate.

Based on the current body of scientific evidence, chondroitin sulfate does not appear to consistently raise blood pressure levels in most individuals. While some small-scale studies have hinted at a potential association, larger studies have failed to demonstrate a significant link. Nonetheless, it is recommended that individuals with underlying cardiovascular conditions seek professional advice before introducing chondroitin sulfate or any other supplement into their routine. As with any dietary supplement, it is always prudent to make informed decisions in consultation with a healthcare professional.
