  • DHA: An Essential Omega-3 Fatty Acid for Optimal Health
Docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, is a type of omega-3 fatty acid. Like eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), another omega-3 fatty acid, DHA is plentiful in oily fish such as salmon and anchovies. DHA is an essential fatty acid, meaning that it cannot be synthesized by the body and must be obtained through the diet. It plays a crucial role in brain development and function, as well as in maintaining eye health. DHA is particularly important for pregnant and breastfeeding women, as it is essential for the proper development of the fetus and infant. In addition to its role in brain and eye health, DHA has also been shown to have numerous other health benefits. It has been linked to improved heart health by reducing triglyceride levels and blood pressure. DHA also has anti-inflammatory properties and may help reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as arthritis and heart disease. DHA may also improve cognitive function in older adults. Studies have shown that supplementing with DHA can improve memory and cognitive function in older adults with mild cognitive impairment. DHA can be obtained through the diet by consuming oily fish or by taking supplements. It is also found in some fortified foods such as eggs and milk. Vegetarians and vegans can obtain DHA from algae-based supplements. For related products, please visit our website:https://www.reachever.com/Fish-Oil_p231.html

  • Study Finds Omega-3 May Have Protective Effect Against Coronavirus Infection
Omega-3 fatty acids, especially EPA and DHA, may have a protective effect against COVID-19 infection andor adverse outcomes, according to a new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN) that explores the role of omega-3 fatty acids, specifically EPA and DHA, and whether they may have a protective effect against COVID-19 infection andor adverse outcomes.   The study compared the risk of three COVID-19 outcomes - testing positive, hospitalization, and death - as a function of baseline plasma DHA levels. DHA levels (as a percentage of total fatty acids) were measured by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy but were converted to an omega-3 index (red blood cell EPA+DHA%) in this analysis. Prospective cohort studies from the UK Biobank were used to obtain the three outcomes and relevant covariates for 110,584 participants (hospitalization and death) and 26,595 participants who had been tested (COVID-19 PCR positive) during the period of January 2020 to March 2021.   In fully adjusted models, individuals in the highest fifth (with the highest omega-3 index levels) had a 21% lower likelihood of testing positive than those in the lowest fifth, and for each 1-SD (standard deviation) increase in plasma DHA%, the risk of testing positive was 8% lower. The likelihood of hospitalization was also 26% lower for individuals in the highest fifth than for those in the lowest fifth, and for each 1-SD increase in DHA%, the risk of hospitalization was 11% lower. For COVID-19 death, the risk decreased monotonically before the fourth fifth, but the decrease was partially attenuated beyond the fifth fifth and became nonsignificant. Omega-3 index estimates for the five DHA fifths ranged from 3.5% (lowest fifth) to 8% (highest fifth).   The researchers noted in their paper that these values are consistent with an omega-3 index risk cutoff [initially proposed for cardiovascular disease mortality in 2004] of 8% (low risk) and suggest that these target levels may also be applicable to COVID-19 outcomes.   The researchers also noted that South Korea and Japan reported very low severity of COVID-19 disease, and although underreporting of cases, social distancing policies, and other population-wide interventions undoubtedly contributed to this, it is interesting to note that healthy Koreans and Japanese have omega-3 index values of approximately 8-12% and 7-11%, respectively, which is much higher than the 4-5% omega-3 index in Western populations like the US.   Vivar-Sierra et al. documented a worldwide pattern of higher omega-3 fatty acid intakes being associated with lower COVID-19 death rates. Although only suggestive, this observation further supports a potential role for omega-3s EPA and DHA in preventing fatal COVID-19 disease, the researchers said.   This study confirms earlier findings that low omega-3 status is associated with an increased risk of COVID-19 hospitalization, said William S. Harris, PhD, FA...

  • Widely used natural sweetener
In recent years, with the improvement of health awareness, many people have begun to pay attention to the health hazards of sugar, which may accelerate aging, cause obesity, and even hyperlipidemia, diabetes, cancer, endocrine disorders, etc., but it is still difficult to resist the temptation of sweetness, so many practitioners began to Many sugar substitute drinks and desserts have been launched, featuring low calorie content and a sweet taste. Especially with the call for sugar reduction, "sugar substitute" has gradually attracted attention. But are sugar substitutes and sweeteners really a good choice to replace sugar? Sugar substitutes, also known as sweeteners, as the name suggests, are substitutes that can replace sugar. There are many types and have sweet and low-calorie properties. Different sweeteners have different tastes, which can be tens to hundreds of sucrose. Therefore, as long as a small amount is added, the desired sweetness can be achieved, so it is often used as a substitute for sucrose and added to food, and the calories are lower than that of sucrose, or even negligible. The "zero-calorie" drink appeared. Products with less than 5 calories per 100ml can be marked as "zero calories". Sweeteners from natural sources, common ones are: Stevia: Extracted from Compositae herbs, it is 200 to 300 times sweeter than sucrose, and its calories are almost negligible. Erythritol: Also known as erythritol, it exists in many fruits (grapes, pears, etc.) and is mostly used as a low-calorie sweetener and flavor enhancer in food additives. The sweetness of erythritol is sucrose. 70% of the calorie production, 1 gram of calories is about 0.4 kcal, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the European Union and Japan even allow it to be marked as 0 kcal/g, which can be said to have almost no calories. Sorbitol: Also known as sorbitol, it has a refreshing feel and is often used to make chewing gum or sugar-free candies. After eating, it will still generate calories, and it is a nutritive sweetener. 1 gram of calories is about 2.6 calories, and the sweetness is about half of sucrose. Xylitol: It is a natural sweetener often extracted from birch, corncob, bagasse and other plants. It belongs to sugar alcohols. It will produce a cool feeling in the mouth and will not cause tooth decay. Therefore, it is often used in chewing gum or The cool mouth contains lozenges, but xylitol will still generate heat after eating, 1 gram of heat is about 2.4 calories, and the sweetness is comparable to sucrose, about 90% of sucrose.
